Community Living Campbellford/Brighton recognized for excellence
Prestigious William H. Donner Award accepted in December ceremony Friday January 13, 2012 -- Kristian Partington
For Nancy Brown, executive director at Community Living Campbellford/Brighton, accepting the 2011 William H. Donner Award for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services on Dec. 2 was a fine way to close out a busy year.
The Donner Canadian Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services recognized seven non-profit as the best-run in the country, sharing $60,000 in award money among them.
The $20,000 William H. Donner award which was shared jointly between Community Living Campbellford/Brighton and Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey, British Columbia, is given to the highest-performing agency or in this case, agencies, each year.
Nearly 600 applications for the awards were received in 2011 and the winners, chosen by the Fraser Institute on behalf of the Donner Canadian Foundation, were selected based in performance in 10 areas, such as innovation, monitoring of outcomes, and management and governance.
The agency had recently come to a resolution to questions of labour agreements only days before the awards ceremony in Toronto, and Brown says considering many of the challenges facing the sector, it’s nice to be able to highlight the great work of staff and volunteers with an award such as this.
She’s modest as she laughs and says, “I’m not one to toot our own horn, but this is a big deal for us.”
Fraser Institute director of non-profit studies Niels Veldhuis highlights the importance of the contributions of non-profits to the communities they serve.
“All of the winning organizations have made great strides to enrich their communities,” he says.
“The work they carry out so effectively and efficiently has helped countless individuals and families, and for that they deserve to be recognized for excellence.”
For her part, Brown expresses sincere gratitude to the volunteers, staff and community members who work tirelessly in support of the agency and consistently contribute to its success.
“We’re thrilled to have been a part of this very prestigious awards program as it recognizes excellence in non-profit organizations delivering social services,” says Brown.
