Taking the Next Step: What to do in the meantime - Part 2

Date:
Sep. 22, 6pm - 9pm

This workshop is for families and their allies who may find themselves at a cross-roads or time of transition – perhaps at the end-of-school transition, at any life stage without funding or financial resources, and unsure of a plan or the way forward in a complex world.

This two-session workshop is a mix of philosophy and principles combined with solid practical ideas that can be implemented immediately. It will give participants a chance to work at a mind set that allows us to move forward without becoming overwhelmed, because it is steeped in every day ways of being a part of a family and a part of a community. This approach is supplemented by skills in developing small (and immediately) achievable roles, in asking on behalf of the person, in making ones own changes, and in identifying the very best next step forward. Participants will have the opportunity to think about, develop, critique their own and each other’s plans, and even begin to implement their own plans in the time lag between the first and second evening

Specifically, this workshop has been designed to provide an opportunity for participants to gain:

  • greater motivation, skill and confidence in identifying and taking personal action now, rather than waiting for funding, programme spaces or other service options;
  • greater skill in assisting a person to deepen small, easily- accessible valued roles that carry a big impact;
  • greater skill and comfort in asking, offering and inviting regarding roles and relationship in community;
  • greater ability to personally affect and find the community we want to see;
  • an awareness of a mindset that will set us off on the best foot for making a positive difference in our family and community life
  • a greater confidence in being able to take the small, but significance steps that will begin to make a difference right away
  • an understanding that ordinary, every day approaches have power, practicality, and endurance
  • an opportunity to experience the energy and support of people working together.

This two-evening day-long workshop will be held at The Gathering Place, Durham Association for Family Respite Services and presented by Janet Klees. For more information, call (416) 261-4536. To register, go to:  www.kerrysplaceautismservices.org/respitetraining
