Volunteer Advisors Needed for People First of Ontario

We are currently seeking volunteers to serve as our provincial advisors to support the work of this organization.

What is an Advisor?
The advisor is someone who an individual can trust and they feel comfortable with.  The advisor is appointed by the Board of Directors of People First of Ontario. The advisor helps people receive information in a form that allows them to understand what is happening at meetings, events, and in the business of People First of Ontario. The goal is for Board members to be able to make decisions by themselves. The advisor is encouraged to share their opinions and knowledge for the purpose of enabling Board members to understand the consequences of decisions.

We are seeking volunteer advisors for a two year period in the following areas:

1. Advisor to support Board Process - Assist with the ongoing running of the Board, including agenda development, and providing support.

  • Assist the President in preparing for Board meetings.
  • Ongoing phone/email communication with the President and Board members
  • Attending 4-6 meetings a year in Toronto
  • Attend the AGM/Conference

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with Board process and responsibilities of non-profit/charitable organizations.
  • Knowledgeable and sensitive to the issues of people labeled with an intellectual disability
  • Understanding of the importance of plain language.

2. Advisor to assist with Issues & Education – Assist with accompanying and reporting back on external meetings, helping to decide on what to do, and media relations.

  • Help members understand the issues affecting them and helping to educate people in the province about these issues.
  • Accompany and support Members to participate on external government and other committees.
  • To attend Board meetings as needed

Qualifications:

  •  Knowledgeable and sensitive to the issues of people labeled with an intellectual disability.
  • Understanding of the importance of plain language.
  • Experience in community development and public education work.
